Memorize Greek myth as a family tree and you'll retain who bore whom while losing why the throne kept changing hands. This list keeps the original sequence but reads each stage for one thing: who the oppressed party allied with next. Uranus falling to Cronus, Cronus falling to Zeus β neither transition is explained by strength alone.
It follows Hesiod's account as the baseline and flags where later versions diverge. Read each entry not as an isolated event but as a setup for the one after it, and the mythology starts to look far more like cause and effect than a list of names.

A World That Began in Chaos
The divine genealogy doesn't start from nothing β it starts from formless Chaos. Hesiod has Gaia and Tartarus appear right after, and the world's structure begins to take shape from there. It's the starting point that proves Zeus wasn't ruler from the beginning; he arrived late, after several generations had already fought for the job.

Gaia and Uranus, the First Dynasty
Uranus, born of Gaia, paired with his own mother to father the Titans and other gods. The trouble started when he locked some of those children away deep inside the earth β a decision that planted the seeds of his own downfall. Remember this scene and Cronus's later rebellion starts to look less like villainy and more like consequence.

Cronus Overthrows Uranus
Gaia hands Cronus, one of the imprisoned children, a sickle and sends him after his father. Cronus wins, but the blood spilled in the act gives rise to the Erinyes and the Giants β he unknowingly plants the seeds of the next war in the moment he wins the current one. Victory, this myth insists from the start, never quite means stability.

The Children Cronus Swallowed
Warned by prophecy that one of his own children would dethrone him, Cronus swallows each newborn as it arrives. The god who rose to power by overthrowing his father becomes, almost immediately, a father who fears his own children β a recurring warning in this mythology: power held through fear tends to repeat the very fear that built it.
