Weight classes, striking and grappling basics, and judging criteria β once you know these, there's far more to see beyond the highlight reel.
Watch only the highlight reel and UFC looks like nothing but flashy knockouts, but the more you understand about weight classes, distance management, grappling, and judging criteria, the more dimensional a fight becomes. This list isn't about tracking who won a particular bout β it's built around the fighter types, basic concepts, and content worth checking out before you watch your first UFC card.
A good starting point is building interest through a familiar fighter's highlights, then learning weight classes, basic terminology, and judging criteria in that order β the next fight you watch will make a lot more sense. This piece covers fighters based on their official competitive record, and focuses on the rules and viewing points that help you follow the judging.

Frequently asked questions
How long are UFC rounds?
Regular bouts run three rounds, while title fights and main events run five, with each round lasting five minutes. There's a rest period between rounds, and stamina management becomes increasingly important to the outcome as a fight goes into its later rounds.
How is a winner decided if a fight goes to the judges?
Three judges score each round under a 10-point system, awarding the round winner 10 points and the other fighter fewer. Because judges weigh the quality of significant strikes, damage dealt, grappling threats, and overall control, simply moving around more doesn't guarantee a round.
What's a good first fight to watch as a beginner?
There's no single right answer, but a good approach is building interest through a familiar fighter's recent fight or an official highlight reel, then watching a few more fights in the same weight class to get comfortable with the terminology and judging criteria. Fight cards and schedules are available on UFC's official channels.
