Confucian academies, a royal tomb, a ginkgo village, and open grassland — a slower route through Angang, Seomyeon, and Sannae.
If a Gyeongju trip stays within Hwangnidan-gil and the Bomun district, it misses the western side entirely. Around Angang, Joseon-era academies and old houses still line a stream valley; further out in Seomyeon and Sannae, farming villages give way to open grassland and rivers. This list splits the route into an Angang loop and a Seomyeon–Sannae loop, since covering both in one pass makes for a long day.
Here are seven stops from Oksan Seowon to Sannae's Dongchang Stream, roughly in visiting order. Public transit is limited out here, so plan on driving, and build in extra time since the roads get dark early once the sun sets.
Oksan Seowon, Dongnakdang, the thirteen-story pagoda, and King Heungdeok's Tomb cluster together in Angang, but adding Dori Village and Sannae's Hwarang Hill and Dongchang Stream adds a lot of driving. Splitting the two areas across separate half-days works better.
Even where doors are open, stick to the marked visitor areas rather than private living quarters. These sites still serve their original educational and residential purposes, so a quiet visit is expected.
Autumn, when the ginkgo trees turn, draws the largest crowds — check designated parking and walking routes ahead of time. Regardless of season, stay off farmland and out of residents' daily spaces.
