How an instructor responds to a child's mistake in a trial class says more than any amount of shiny equipment
The first things you notice walking into a taekwondo academy are the size of the floor and the wall of trophies. What actually determines whether your child sticks with it for years is usually invisible on a first look: instructor credentials, how many kids share one teacher, and how mistakes get handled.

Instructor certifications
Ask upfront about national board or federation credentials and completed child-safety training. Multiple experienced instructors on staff usually means more accumulated know-how for handling different kids' temperaments.

Class size
Five to eight children per instructor is a reasonable benchmark. Beyond that, individual form correction and safety supervision tend to get looser.

Trial class observation
Watch how the instructor responds when a child messes up or gets scared during the trial class. An encouraging tone that doesn't rush or shame matters more than an impressive curriculum on paper.

Safety equipment and mats
Check that mats are thick with no gaps, that gear like helmets and pads isn't worn out, and that everything gets cleaned on a regular schedule.

Clear promotion standards
Ask in advance what the passing criteria for belt tests actually are, and whether there's a retest option if a child doesn't pass. Vague answers here tend to turn into complaints later.
