Burning-rubber smell that lingers after driving
If a burning-rubber smell from around the wheels or engine bay doesn't fade even after a long drive, pull over somewhere well-ventilated and check for smoke or dashboard warnings first. If you also notice smoke or heat, turn off the engine and call roadside assistance or a mechanic โ mentioning any long downhill or stop-and-go driving, plus when the smell started, helps them diagnose it.

Burning-oil smell near the engine bay
If you smell oil hitting a hot surface near the hood, don't touch anything โ just check the dashboard warnings and any marks underneath from a distance. If there's smoke or an oil-pressure warning, pull over right away and call for help, and mention your last oil change.
