A step-by-step car check for after sudden heavy rain -- from wipers to hidden flood damage.
Even a short downpour leaves marks on a car -- streaks on the windshield, tires that grip differently, brakes that feel off, and flood damage that isn't always obvious. This isn't a ranking; Golladream laid out 10 checks in the actual order you'd want to run through them.
Five minutes before you start the engine can prevent a much bigger repair bill later. If you suspect flooding, the rule is simple: don't start the car, call your insurer first. Photograph anything that looks off as you go -- it makes explaining the problem to a mechanic much easier.

Wiper blades
Streaks on the glass or a shuddering wiper blade mean your visibility is already compromised. Clear debris from both the glass and the blade first, then check for cracking or noise. Avoid running dry wipers on dry glass for long stretches -- it wears the rubber down faster.

Windshield film and fogging
Figure out whether the blur is outside moisture or inside humidity before you do anything else. Run the defrost mode and ventilation to clear both surfaces. Handle it while parked -- wiping the glass by hand mid-drive is a good way to lose track of the road ahead.

Tire tread and pressure
On wet pavement, a tire's drainage capacity is its grip. Check pressure against the manufacturer's spec while the tires are cold, and look for uneven wear or damage. Normal numbers don't mean it's fine to blast through standing water at speed.

Brake response
After driving through standing water, your braking feel can change. Test it gently at low speed somewhere safe, watching for noise or pulling to one side. Never test this with a hard stop in traffic -- that's not the place to find out.

Headlights and taillights
Once the rain clears, other drivers still need to see you. Check headlights, brake lights, and turn signals for trapped moisture and proper function. Don't assume daytime running lights alone are enough visibility for heavy-rain conditions.
